The summer may be over in mainland Spain but the sun doesn’t stop shining on Lanzarote in the Canaries.

Where visitors can expect to enjoy lazy days by the pool or on the beach even during December and January. As this popular holiday island is located off the coast of Morocco and basks in temperatures in the 20´s whatever the time of year.

As a result Lanzarote is extremely popular with tourists from nearby Northern Europe. Who are able to reach this winter refuge in around four hours from airports in the UK and Germany. British tourists especially are able to take advantage of cheap flights to the island as a result of a number of special offers this winter. With airlines such as Ryanair offering returns for under £10.

There are plenty of different places to stay on the island. Hotels and apartments are very popular for example. But many visitors today prefer to book their own private Lanzarote villas (1) direct online. Bypassing traditional travel agencies and brokers to build their own holidays.

During the winter months most tourists opt for one of two resorts – Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen. As these are both located towards the southern end of the island and hence enjoy better weather as a result.

Puerto del Carmen used to be a small fishing village called La Tiñosa – before evolving into the mega resort of today. Now extending from its origins in the Old Town harbour some 5 miles towards the island’s sole airport at Arrecife.

It was created during the 1970´s as a sort of budget break haven – offering good value accommodation in apartment complexes. So there’s not much in the way of hotels or holiday villas in Puerto del Carmen (2) for tourists to select from. Leaving Playa Blanca as the better bet for those seeking good quality self-catering accommodation.

The island offers plenty for visitors to do and see – including the weird volcanic scenery of the Timanfaya National Park and the incredible creations of the local artist César Manrique. And because it is so small it’s easy to get out and tour and explore. With car hire starting at around €90 per week.

Some of the finest scenery can be found in the north of the island in and around the Valley of 1000 Palms. Where locals have planted Canarian palms for each newborn child. Creating a real African stlye oasis.
