Is it possible to leave an airport to go sightseeing inbetween flights?

We are stopping@LAX on the way back from Hawaii in August. Our flight gets to LAX @ 5am and our departing flight to London doesn't leave til 1pm so we've got roughly 8 hours to kill. Is it possible to leave the airport for a couple of hours as we've had a look and there are a couple of beaches just 2 miles away? Not really sure of the protocol or security issues with this?
